A Predator Lurking Beneath the Surface
“You’ll never go on social media again to try and build a business.”
Introduction
In 1975, a movie called Jaws terrified millions, including a 12-year-old me. The shark in that movie was more than a creature; it was a force of nature—mindless, emotionless, and unstoppable. It didn’t kill out of malice but because that’s what it was designed to do. Watching it, you didn’t even need to see the shark to feel the fear. The suspense built until the moment it struck, and by then, it was too late for the victims.
Fast forward to today, and we have a new kind of predator—a digital one. It doesn’t have fins, but it moves just as stealthily, hiding beneath the surface of every social media platform. It’s called the algorithm. Like the shark in Jaws, the algorithm is a perfectly engineered machine, devoid of emotions, existing only to serve its purpose: to keep people engaged while it devours their time, focus, and—if you’re a network marketer—your chances of building a sustainable business.
The Algorithm: A Mindless Predator
In Jaws, the shark is described as:
“Without change, without passion, without logic. It lives to kill. A mindless eating machine, it will attack and devour anything.”
The algorithm works much the same way. It doesn’t care about your business, your dreams, or the value you bring to the table. Its goal is to maximize engagement, often at your expense. It pits people against each other, prioritizes controversy over community, and rewards superficial popularity over genuine connection.
Yet, people jump into the “waters” of social media, convinced they can outsmart it.
Influencers and network marketing trainers tell you, “Follow this strategy, and you’ll beat the algorithm!”
But here’s the truth: the algorithm isn’t something you can beat. It’s a red ocean, filled with thrashing competitors, each one trying to get noticed while the algorithm profits off their efforts.
The Swimmers: Victims of a False Narrative
In Jaws, the real villains aren’t just the shark—they’re the town officials and business owners who refuse to close the beaches. They dismiss the warnings because tourist dollars are more important to them than saving lives.
Similarly, in network marketing, the real villains are the trainers, influencers, and even companies who push the fantasy that anyone can build a thriving business on social media. They know the truth: only those with existing followings or a “perfect” image have a real chance. Yet, they keep selling the dream to unsuspecting newcomers. These “swimmers” are too trusting to see the danger until it’s too late.
The Police Chief: Sounding the Alarm
This is where I come in. I’m not here to scare you away from network marketing but to point out the dangers of relying on social media algorithms to build your business. It’s a battle you can’t win because the game is rigged.
I’m not saying you can’t succeed, but it requires a different approach—a blue ocean strategy. Instead of fighting for scraps in overcrowded, shark-infested waters, you need to create a space where the algorithm has no power. A space where you can connect with people on your terms, without manipulation or flattery.
The Red Ocean vs. Blue Ocean Strategy
In marketing, the red ocean represents saturated markets where competition is fierce, and everyone fights over the same audience. Social media is the ultimate red ocean. The algorithm thrives here, feeding on the chaos.
The blue ocean, on the other hand, is where you create your own market space, free from competition. This is what my network marketing business is all about. It’s built on biblical principles and grassroots strategies that allow you to connect with people authentically, without relying on the algorithm
What’s Next?
In the coming posts, I’ll share how you can escape the algorithm’s grasp and build a business that thrives on integrity, wisdom, and long-term relationships.
Just like Chief Brody in Jaws, I’m sounding the alarm. You can’t ignore the danger beneath the surface. But unlike the swimmers in the movie, you have a choice. Will you dive into the red ocean, or will you join me in creating a blue one?
Turning Away from the Shark
The algorithm has admitted its purpose—to manipulate, divide, and feed on our engagement. But what’s more frightening is how we’ve let it dictate our actions. Like swimmers venturing into shark-infested waters, we assume we can outsmart it, beat it at its own game.
Yet Proverbs 22:3 warns us:
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”
The danger is clear. Social media algorithms are not your ally—they’re designed to profit from your struggles. Every like, share, or comment you make is fuel for the machine.
But you don’t have to play this game.
