How MLMs Keep You Chasing the Carrot on a Stick
The Chaos Without Vision
Proverbs 29:18 states, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” The verse paints a vivid picture of what happens when individuals or organizations lack a clear vision. They become unrestrained, moving in every direction, driven by confusion rather than purpose. In network marketing, this lack of vision is not only common—it’s exploited.
The MLM industry thrives on confusion and chaos. Promises of overnight riches and financial freedom keep people chasing dreams and fantasies without providing the structure or strategy needed to achieve them. The result? Millions running on an endless treadmill, chasing a carrot they will never catch.
Fantasy vs. Dream vs. Vision
Before diving deeper into the metaphor of the carrot on the stick, it’s crucial to understand the difference between fantasies, dreams, and vision:
- Fantasy
- A fantasy is completely unrealistic. It’s akin to wishing you could fly by flapping your arms. MLMs often market fantasies under the guise of possibility—selling candles, vitamins, or digital products with the promise of becoming a millionaire in your spare time.
- Example: “Sell this one product, recruit your friends, and in a year, you’ll be rich!” Fantasies don’t consider the hard realities of attrition rates, market saturation, or the actual costs of sustaining a business.
- Dream
- A dream is more grounded than a fantasy but still lacks structure. Dreams are often wishes, like wanting to retire early or buy a luxurious home. While possible, they require more than hope to become reality. Dreams are the seeds of potential, but without action, they remain just that—dreams.
- Vision
- Vision is where purpose and action meet. Vision includes the structure, steps, and sacrifices necessary to turn dreams into reality. It’s not just about wanting to achieve something—it’s about having a plan to achieve it. Vision also eliminates distractions, giving you a focused path forward.
The Carrot-and-Stick Trap of MLMs
The “carrot on a stick” metaphor perfectly encapsulates how MLMs manipulate their recruits.
- The Carrot: This represents the dream or fantasy sold to new recruits. It’s the shiny object—wealth, freedom, or status—that always seems within reach but never materializes.
- The Stick: The stick holds the carrot just out of reach and is wielded by those higher up the chain. These are the uplines, the trainers, and the “gurus” who profit off the relentless efforts of those below them.
- The Treadmill: In this metaphor, the donkey represents the MLM distributor, and the treadmill is the endless cycle of chasing, recruiting, and reinvesting in a business model that benefits the few at the top while draining everyone else.
How MLMs Create Chaos
- Unrealistic Expectations
MLMs rarely provide a realistic pathway to success. Instead, they rely on vague promises like “find five people who find five people.” This creates a fantasy of exponential growth that ignores the harsh realities of attrition, competition, and market limits. - Confusion as a Strategy
Without a clear vision, MLM recruits are often overwhelmed with contradictory advice—focus on recruiting, no, focus on selling products, wait, do both. This confusion is intentional. It keeps people busy and distracted from realizing they’re going nowhere. - Manipulation Through FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
The illusion of vision in MLMs is often supported by urgency tactics: “Join now before the market is saturated,” or “You’re in the perfect position to get in early!” These appeals to scarcity create chaos, leading people to act impulsively rather than thoughtfully.
The Solution: True Vision
The antidote to MLM chaos is true vision. Vision provides clarity, direction, and a realistic understanding of what is achievable. Here’s how to build it:
- Start with Realistic Goals
- Avoid vague goals like “I want to be rich.” Instead, set actionable, measurable goals like “I will talk to three prospects each day” or “I will spend 30 minutes daily learning about my industry.”
- Understand the System
- Evaluate whether the system you’re in aligns with biblical principles and ethical practices. Does it build value, serve others, and glorify God? Or is it built on manipulation and deceit?
- Focus on Sustainability
- Vision isn’t about overnight success; it’s about building something sustainable. This requires consistent effort, integrity, and a willingness to put others’ needs ahead of your own.
- Educate Yourself
- Read Proverbs and other scriptures to understand how flattery, charm, and deceit are often used to manipulate. Be suspicious of opportunities that sound too good to be true.
Closing: Break Free from the Treadmill
MLMs often sell chaos disguised as opportunity, leaving participants running in circles. But with true vision, grounded in God’s principles, you can break free. Don’t settle for chasing carrots held by someone else. Instead, focus on building a vision that aligns with your purpose, values, and the reality of what is achievable.
Remember, vision is not about quick wins—it’s about creating clarity, direction, and sustainable growth. Proverbs 14:15 reminds us, “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps.” Be prudent, step off the treadmill, and start building something real.
