The Truth About Goals

Separating Goals, Dreams, Fantasies, and Vision

When most people talk about goals, they unintentionally blur the lines between fantasies, dreams, and vision. This confusion sabotages their efforts and prevents real progress. A fantasy is unrealistic, a dream lacks structure, and most goals people set are simply unattainable because they focus on the end result instead of actionable steps.

True goals are about focusing on what you can do today—steps that lead toward a bigger vision. Without clear vision and realistic goals, you’re left chasing fantasies or hoping your dreams will materialize without a plan. Proverbs 29:18 reminds us: “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Vision grounds us in reality and provides the framework to move beyond empty wishes into actionable success.

Breaking Down the Differences

  1. Fantasy: The Mirage
    • What it is: A fantasy is unrealistic and detached from effort or reality. It’s imagining yourself as a millionaire overnight without understanding the work and structure required to sustain wealth.
    • The problem: Fantasies are often fueled by emotions, marketing gimmicks, or an overestimation of your own abilities. In network marketing, the “get five who get five” model is a classic example of a fantasy—it looks good on paper but ignores human nature, effort, and market realities.
    • Biblical Insight: Proverbs 12:11 warns, “He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment.”
  2. Dreams: The Wish Without a Plan
    • What it is: A dream is a vision without structure. It’s an idea of what you’d like to achieve but lacks the actionable steps or defined parameters to get there.
    • The problem: Dreams can inspire, but without moving toward goals, they remain unfulfilled. In business, this looks like someone “dreaming” of starting a company but never considering the specifics of operations, funding, or marketing.
    • Biblical Insight: Proverbs 14:23 says, “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”
  3. Goals: The Action Steps
    • What it is: Goals are tangible, actionable steps that lead you toward a dream or vision. They focus on what you can do today and every day to move forward.
    • The problem: Many confuse goals with outcomes. For example, losing 50 pounds is not a goal—it’s an outcome. A real goal would be committing to eating healthy today or exercising consistently.
    • How to set goals: Use the SMART framework: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
  4. Vision: The Blueprint
    • What it is: Vision is the big picture—a clearly defined framework that organizes your dreams and goals into a cohesive plan. Vision takes into account complexities, potential obstacles, and the interconnectedness of all components.
    • Why it matters: Without vision, even the best goals lack direction. In business, this means understanding the system you’re building, how it operates, and how it will sustain itself.
    • Biblical Insight: Proverbs 24:3-4 states, “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” Vision requires wisdom, understanding, and planning.

Common Misconceptions About Goal Setting

  1. The Myth of the End Result
Many people mistake the outcome for the goal. For instance, saying, “I want to make a million dollars” is not a goal—it’s a dream. The real goals are the daily activities, decisions, and systems you implement to reach that financial milestone.
  2. Action Over Aspiration
Goals are not about wishing or hoping. They’re about actions you control. For example, instead of “I will lose 50 pounds,” set a goal like, “I will meal prep healthy lunches for the week.”
  3. The Lottery Mentality
Too often, people set goals as if they’re buying a lottery ticket—hoping against the odds. Network marketing is rife with this mentality, encouraging people to believe they’ll become millionaires without real effort or planning. This is why attrition rates are so high.

The Role of Vision in Goal Setting

Vision bridges the gap between your goals and dreams. It allows you to see the interconnectedness of the system you’re building. For example, in a franchise system like the one I’ve created, vision clarifies the roles, systems, and steps needed to succeed. Without this clarity, people fall back into chaos, chasing fantasies or mimicking flawed systems.

Conclusion

Fantasy, dreams, goals, and vision are all different, but understanding their distinctions is essential for success in business and life. Ground yourself in reality, set actionable goals, and work toward a clear vision. As Proverbs 9:6 advises: “Forsake the simple and live, and walk in the way of understanding.” True success requires wisdom, effort, and a grounded vision—not empty dreams or fleeting fantasies.
